24 SECONDS TO GO

24 SECONDS TO GO

Watching the clock has become a whole lot easier for members of Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Club thanks to the support of Hinckley and Rugby Building Society.

The Society has sponsored a pair of 24 second clocks, Sited at each end of the basketball court, for the Beaumont Leys based club - counting down the time each team is in possession of the ball during play, from 24 seconds to zero.

Meeting to practise twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre, the team comprising of both wheelchair-bound and able-bodied members compete in league matches played at weekends between September and May each year.

Created by injured American servicemen following World War Two, basketball was introduced to Britain in 1955 and is now played in clubs up and down the country.

Mike Foster, Chairman of the Leicester Cobras, said: “Wheelchair basketball is a unique and addictive sport, allowing both male and female players, whether disabled or able-bodied, to all play in the same team - once you’ve been to just one game, you’ll probably be hooked!

“As a registered charity the Cobras rely heavily on sponsorship to enable the club to provide the opportunity and support that encourages people with disabilities to play and enjoy wheelchair basketball.

“The Club is extremely grateful to Hinckley and Rugby for its kind support – the clocks are an intrinsic part of the game.”

Society PR Officer Lisajane Gooden added: “Wheelchair basketball helps to provide opportunities to develop talents, skills, awareness and confidence of its players. Hinckley and Rugby is delighted to be able to support the Leicester Cobras.”
