SOCIETY ANSWERS CHARITY’S PLEA

Building on established links with a local cancer charity, staff at Hinckley and Rugby Building Society took part in a can collection at Hinckley’s Morrison’s supermarket last week.

Collecting loose change in the entrance of the Normandy Way store, nine members of the Society’s staff helped to collect more than £776 for Leicester-based Coping with Cancer.

Following an approach from the charity’s fundraiser Jane Haygreen, staff across the Society’s Leicestershire and Warwickshire network volunteered to spend either a half or full day at Morrison’s over a four-day period as part of Hinckley and Rugby’s ‘Community First’ scheme.

Celebrating ten years since the launch of ‘Community First’ this year, Hinckley and Rugby encourages all staff to take up to three days paid leave a year to volunteer with various local community projects and charities.

Having taken part in the collection on Monday, Hinckley and Rugby’s Castle Street Office Manager Marlene Jenkins said: “I had some lovely chats with the customers, many of whom related their own experiences of ‘coping with cancer’ either for themselves or family.”

Jane Haygreen commented: “I’m thrilled – we managed to collect enough in four days to support the building rental costs of the fortnightly complementary therapy day we run in Hinckley for a whole year!

“I’m extremely grateful to all those from Hinckley and Rugby Building Society who volunteered.”

Society PR Officer Lisajane Gooden would like to encourage those involved with local charities and community projects to contact her with forthcoming volunteering opportunities on 01455 894077 or email l.gooden@hrbs.co.uk
