SOCIETY HELPS PRESERVE ITS PAST

Dating from a bygone age, Hinckley and Rugby Building Society donated an antique printing plate to Rugby Museum this week.

Unearthed after a spring clean at the Society’s Principal Office in Hinckley, the brass plate dating from the late 1800s was used to print special share certificates at the former Rugby Provident Building Society.

Presenting the plate to the museum, the Society’s Rugby Assistant Office Manager Phil Daffern said: “The Society’s literature is obviously now printed laid out by computer and it’s amazing to think how far the printing process has changed since this plate was first produced.

“Hinckley and Rugby is delighted the plate will be preserved by the Museum for future generations in Rugby to see.”

Receiving the plate on behalf of Rugby Museum, Collections Officer Angie Irvine commented: “Strangely enough the Museum only recently acquired a photograph of the Rugby Provident Building Society at its original premises, next door but one to the current Hinckley and Rugby branch in North Street.

“The Museum is always pleased to receive local artefacts as they provide a valuable insight to the history of the town.”

Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the merger of the Hinckley Permanent and Rugby Provident building societies, Hinckley and Rugby recently planted 25 silver birch trees at Whitehall Recreation Ground, Rugby, with Mayor Councillor Bill Sewell and members of Rugby Borough Council’s Parks Department.
