Hinckley & Rugby bowls up with support for club

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has sponsored new trophies for Burgess Bowls Club in Burbage ahead of the start of the new season. The Bowls Club, based at Bridge Road, is holding an open day this Saturday [April 22] for anyone who wants to try the sport. Friday evening coaching sessions from 6pm also start this week.

Hinckley & Rugby was contacted by Paul Buckby, a former colleague now retired, who was seeking sponsorship for new trophies.

Paul, from Burbage and the Club’s competitions secretary, said:

“Our old trophies were more than a little dated and needed replacing. I wondered if the Society would like to help and we are very pleased they said yes.

“We are grateful for the Society’s support of our local club. Its donation of £150 has paid for three trophies that will be awarded after the end of the summer season.”

Burgess Bowls Club has more than 30 active players but is always looking to recruit more, said Paul, who worked at Hinckley & Rugby for 27 years.

“Whether someone has played before or is a novice, they will be warmly welcomed and encouraged to get bowling.”

Hinckley & Rugby customer assistant Abby Johnson visited the club to show the Society’s support and said:

“It was great to hear how much Paul is enjoying bowls in his retirement and we are very pleased to be able to ensure this season’s winners will have smart new trophies.”

Anyone interested in bowling and wishing to join the club can contact the president Michael Bywater on 01455 641751 or Paul Buckby on 01455 617000. Saturday’s open day is from 2pm to 4.30pm at the green on Bridge Road.
