Local sight loss charity Vista and Hinckley & Rugby Building Society are celebrating the 15th year of their growing relationship.
For the past 15 years Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has supported Vista’s Talking News initiative – a programme which involves producing weekly recordings of local newspaper, the Hinckley Times. For those affected by sight loss in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland – by providing regular volunteers to record the news. They have also provided the use of their premises in Hinckley for fellow Vista volunteers to produce their recordings.
Jessica Grewcock, Assistant People Development Manager for HRBS, who volunteers her time to read, said:
“Supporting the Talking Newspaper is very rewarding, It is nice to think that I can keep someone up to date with their local news who is partially sighted or blind as everybody likes to know what is going on in the local area.”
It is a sentiment shared by fellow volunteer, HRBS Administration Manager Diane Clare, who said:
“Reading the local newspaper to support Vista is a very worthwhile cause. It gives you a great sense of belonging knowing you are supporting your local community “
Assistant Marketing & PR Manager Carla Loughrey, who organises the HRBS volunteering team, said:
“The Society has a very long association with Vista, with reading teams having taken part in Talking News for more than 15 years. In that time the scheme has been supported by dozens of Society employees and it continues to be a popular way for them to volunteer their time, with two new members joining the current team of eight this year.”
Lucy Slonecki, Corporate and Community fundraiser for Vista, said Hinckley & Rugby’s continued support “totally altruistic’ and added:
“15 years is a long time to be working together and yet they have never let us down. We appreciate their continued hard work and dedication and are looking forward to the next 15 years!”
