In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re sharing stories from the Society. Hear from our Head of Mortgage Proposition and Distribution, Carolyn Thornley-Yates, below.
I’ve been with the Society for 23 years, joining straight from university as a Customer Assistant in a branch.
I’ve chosen to build my career within the Society rather than seeking external opportunities, as it’s a warm, supportive and welcoming place to work with a vibrant culture and a focus on developing its staff. In my 23 years, I’ve held positions such as Branch Manager, Business Development Manager, Head of Intermediary Sales and now, Head of Mortgage Proposition & Distribution.
I’ve been encouraged to study for industry exams such as the Certificate of Mortgage Advice and Practice (at advanced level) and the Certificate in Financial Services Practice. My biggest achievement is a Masters degree in Management and Leadership, a qualification created by the Building Societies Association in conjunction with Loughborough University. This programme gave me insight into the practices of other societies and academic business models which complemented my own experience as well as enhancing my professional network with some really valuable connections.
As a member of the Society’s Executive Committee, of which more than 50% of the membership is female, I am trusted and empowered to work with my teams to create a customer experience to be proud of, bring about change where required and ensure that our value proposition is second to none.
