Questions and answers from this year’s AGM
As a member for many years, I find the date of the tax year that the society currently operates extremely confusing in particular when a product matures between the dates e.g. after April 6th the next year. I recently had personal experience of this when checking the interests on my relevant accounts with HMRC. I would much prefer that the tax year with your society links up with April 6th – to April 5th the following year as many other Building Societies do. It would be very interesting if this subject is put to a membership vote to see what they think. If they voted for a change of date would the board accept the outcome of that result.
Why don't you offer better interest rates on savings?
Is it the intention to further improve the layout of the online accounts and how members can operate them e.g. when closing an account or on maturity, members are given the opportunity to transfer money to a nominated account e.g. current account with another provider instead of receiving a cheque and the having to pay that in, each account held shows the maturity date and can the log out instruction be more easily visible instead of where it is now. Can we have Easy Access Isas available instead of notice ones as an option?
Will Hinckley and Ruby remain in Hinckley for the foreseeable future?
I also cannot see any justification for branches closing at 2.00 pm on week days especially as branch staff are clearly still working there until 5.00 pm. As a mutually owned organisation customer service, (actually member service) branches should remain open during normal working hours.
Are H&R likely to give a dividend to members in the same way Nationwide did in 2025 (£100 per member)?
Why is it so difficult to transfer money to H&R account from other bank accounts? – cheques are so out of date.
It would be extremely helpful if when recording members accounts online the maturity date and interest rate could be included so that it is visible without having to open up the account details.
It would be helpful if the log in and log out symbols were visible at the top of the page rather than hidden with other information. These two suggestions would make the website more user friendly and enable members to quickly check details.
Can the Log in and Log out symbols be at the top of the page rather than being hidden amongst other information?
Why are you all paid so much?
How are we still helping our customers with the cost-of-living crisis?
Why did we not have an election; all these names are on the board now an election is somebody is NOT elected. I do not rubber stamp.
Why do the Management Expenses keep rising as a percentage of mean total assets?
Is the war in the middle east going to impact on our savings?
What is the ratio of the remuneration of the highest-paid employee to that of the lowest paid? It would show some commitment to fairness to staff, perhaps, if this were published regularly in the annual report.
Do you think you are overpaid? I think so.
We use our HRBS joint account to save for holidays with a regular monthly payment from our bank account. This also has the advantage of earning a modest, amount of interest. We pay for holidays by credit card to ensure Section 75 protection. When the credit card bill is due, we access the bulk of the holiday cost from the HRBS account by moving funds back into the bank account before paying the credit card provider. When doing this we are told that to make a direct transfer from HRBS to our bank account, there is a charge of £25 but we can have a cheque with no charge, – why?
Do you still go in to Schools to deliver financial education workshops?
Would you consider using different properties to have a presence in such as space in Supermarkets to save on costs?
Would it be possible for branches to print out annual interest statements as this is required for my tax return?
Providing feedback in the Lutterworth branch was difficult due to the technology not working, can this be looked at to ensure it is fixed?
