Dorothy Goodman pupils get life lessons in money

Dorothy Goodman School pupils found out how to open a savings account at Hinckley & Rugby as part of a day of financial education sponsored by the Building Society.

The teenage pupils visited the Society’s branch on Hinckley’s Castle Street after enjoying a day of learning about money matters led by Ed Flack, a financial education expert from the not-for-profit WizeUp.

Hinckley & Rugby has been sponsoring WizeUp’s visits to schools in Leicestershire and Warwickshire for the past eight years.

Ed covered topics including earning and saving with pupils at the Hinckley school for children with special educational needs and disabilities, before visiting the Society’s branch.

Ed said:

“We spent a really good day with the post-16 students, the eighth year we have been visiting this school.

“It was lovely to see that many students had already caught the saving bug and we soon set them to work folding leaflets for which they were paid. After a visit to our pop up shop they were able to add to their savings with the change from their shopping spree.

“After lunch we visited a cash machine and spoke about pin and password security before depositing savings with the lovely staff at Hinckley & Rugby’s Castle Street branch.

“As always, huge thanks to the helpful people at Hinckley & Rugby for supporting the day, both through sponsorship and giving up their time to talk to students.”

Dorothy Goodman School learning leader Emma Draycott said:

“It is so important for everyone to be able to learn about earning money and saving money.  It is even more important to give our pupils a voice about their finances.”

Hinckley & Rugby’s branch office manager Tracey Phipps welcomed the students to the Castle Street branch. Tracey said:
