How many cash ISAs can I have?

If you’re wondering, ‘How many cash ISAs can I have?’ We are here to help break this down for you. In the tax year 2026/7, you can hold as many cash ISA accounts as you like; however, there are certain limitations which we will explain in this article.

A cash ISA is a tax-free savings account available for UK residents aged 18 or over. We will discuss the limitations to holding multiple ISA accounts and the benefits, and we will provide you with some guidance on how you can manage your accounts.

So you’re wondering ‘Can I have more than one cash ISA?’ In the tax year 2026/7, the answer is yes, you can have as many cash ISA accounts as you like. There are, however, limitations on this:

  • You can open or pay into as many Cash ISAs as you would like to; however, you can only contribute up to £20,000 across all ISA accounts.
  • Transfers from one ISA to another won’t count towards your personal allowance
  • Different providers may have different rules about how many Cash ISAs you can open in the same tax year – so you should check with your chosen provider before you open an account. At Hinckley & Rugby we only allow individuals to open one Cash ISA with us per tax year.

Having more than one cash ISA account can be a great way to grow your savings. Here are some of the top reasons you might decide to open more than one cash ISA account.

  • New rates: It allows you to access new and competitive rates that become available through the tax year.
  • Splitting goals: You can choose to open various accounts for different goals.
  • Access: You may wish to keep some of your money accessible in an Easy Access Cash ISA but also put a lump sum aside that you don’t need access to in a Fixed Rate ISA or Notice Cash ISA.

When it comes to managing multiple cash ISA accounts, there are several ways you can streamline the process to ensure you stay on top of your savings.

You can only save up to £20,000 across all of your cash ISA accounts, so make sure you are keeping track of your payments to avoid exceeding your allowance and losing the tax-free benefits on the extra money.

If you find a cash ISA account with a better interest rate and want to move your existing cash ISA, always speak to the new provider and request an ISA transfer. This will ensure you protect its tax-free status.

If you’d like to transfer your Cash ISA from another provider to a new or existing Hinckley & Rugby Cash ISA, we’re here to help. We can also help you with internal Cash ISA transfers between two different Hinckley & Rugby accounts.

You’ll find lots of information on this page, including the required forms.

While you can make full use of the £20,000 allowance in Cash ISAs right now, it is important to plan ahead. From 6 April 2027, the new £12,000 Cash ISA cap for those under the age of 65 will come into place.

While your overall ISA allowance will remain at £20,000 (meaning the remaining £8,000 can be placed into Stocks & Shares or Lifetime ISAs), the maximum you can save in a Cash ISA will reduce to £12,000.

If you are under 65, maximising your full £20,000 Cash ISA allowance during the current 2026/27 tax year is a smart way to shield as much of your money in the tax-free Cash ISA wrapper before these new limits come into effect.

If you will be 65 or over on 6 April 2027, your Cash ISA limit will remain at the full £20,000.
