The building society branch team which prevented a rogue trader from defrauding a vulnerable elderly customer out of £1,800 has been crowned the winner of Hinckley & Rugby’s annual prize for its most outstanding members of staff.
The South Wigston team was selected as the 2017 winner of the Jeanette Lewis FAB Award at a staff gathering in Hinckley. The Jeanette Lewis trophy was first awarded in 2012 in memory of a much-missed former colleague.
The branch team, led by office manager Marie Yates, was worried about what was happening and prevented the customer losing hundreds of pounds of his savings.
Hinckley & Rugby chief executive Chris White said:
“Their actions prevented this gentleman from being defrauded and protected the Society against any repercussions.
“The enquiries they made, the measures they took to stop this from happening and the support they provided to this member and his daughter, who is also a vulnerable person, both during and after this incident, makes the South Wigston team a deserving winner.”
The South Wigston branch was nominated several times during the past 12 months for the Society’s monthly FAB staff award. In the past 12 months more than 40 nominations were made for the awards, given to team members who have gone the extra mile to help customers, colleagues and the community.
The award for the 2017 Volunteer of the Year went to savings manager Kerry McDonagh, who was nominated by four different colleagues. Kerry has volunteered for Leicestershire Cares’ Go for Reading project helping school pupils each week with literacy since 2012.
Kerry has also provided mock interviews to school leavers, organised a Christmas party for Mencap in Hinckley, wrapped presents for Toys on the Table and encouraged members of the savings team to also volunteer in several ways.
Chris White said: “Thank you, Kerry, for setting a fantastic example and to all our volunteers. The Society is very proud of all staff who donate their time to projects in the community and to raising funds for charities.”
Long-serving member of staff Jeanette Sobalski was presented with a bouquet in recognition of her 30 years at Hinckley & Rugby since joining the Rugby branch team in 1987. Chris said:
“Jeanette has been serving our members there ever since – and always with a smile.”
