WizeUp, a not-for-profit group of financial education experts, was back for its third visit to the school thanks to sponsorship from Hinckley & Rugby. More than 120 students from Year 12 learned about money matters and applying for jobs.

WizeUp’s Ed Flack spent the first day tackling financial good health, with topics including bank accounts, tax, housing costs and money pitfalls to look out for.

The second day saw Ed in seminars with students intending to seek work when they leave next year rather than continue in education. Ed covered the skills employers are looking for, how to write an effective CV and techniques for doing well in interviews.

Janet Paterson, Head of Post 16 at John Cleveland College, said: “It was hugely popular with the students. A number of them said all schools should run these sessions as they are so useful. One said ‘you know, Miss, that was exactly what I needed’.

“The support from Hinckley & Rugby is a fantastic partnership and we really do appreciate it. Ed is so positive and supportive, and offers to go on helping by checking their CVs.”

There was a touching moment when a former pupil dropped in to share his experience of working at Hinckley-based motor cycle manufacturer Triumph, said Janet.

“He said that Ed’s advice two years ago helped him get his apprenticeship.”

WizeUp’s Ed Flack said: “The students were really enthusiastic and had lots of questions for us. The level of commitment they show always impresses me.”

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society assistant office manager Claire Spriggs said: “As a local building society we would like all local school leavers to be financially healthy as they gain their independence. We’re very happy that we could bring Ed back to John Cleveland with his great advice.”
